My VS in the wet has a tendency to wheel spin (without being an idiot) even when turning from a standstill, I went looking for an O/e IRS LSD centre originally, I found a couple in the $700-800 range. So the upgrade to a far superior, smoother & quieter LSD option was a no brainer. The V6 won't be in it for ever, so its all about upgrading for a future state.

Truetrac differentials are unique in that they increase traction but do not affect steering or wear out prematurely; these problems are common with limited-slip differentials that use clutch plates and springs. Truetrac performs like a conventional differential, until there is a loss of traction.

I doubt that there is a diff builder, tuner or car builder that doesn’t recommend a Truetrac as the default diff centre. It can be used in most applications from spirited driving events to driving to church on Sundays.

I’ve got a fully reco M78 LSD 4 pinion centre in my VK & that was $1k back in the day with all new bearings, side gears & cones. Remember the VL Turbo diff tax!

My diff builder recommended a KAAZ over a Trutrac. He can install either but his preference tends to be a KAAZ.

Problem is, your KAAZ still requires frequent oil changes and has wearing parts, it just wears out slower than the factory LSD.

I changed the oil on my truetrac and the oil that came out looked like the oil that went in.

Yeah, every 15k now, which is a little frequent, plus a $12 additive.

Do you just run mineral oil in Trutrac, like you can in a KAAZ but without the additive?

They recommend mineral in a truetrac, I'm currently running a synthetic as a test, it is supposed to make the diff a little less effective as the oil is "slipperier" than mineral oil (less aggressive for the missus). TBH, I don't know if I can feel the difference, maybe after I go back to mineral next time I'll notice it more?

Is your Trutrac a Harrop? And is is noisy? I've heard reports about Harrops sometimes being noisy and requiring something to be machined which fixes the problem. Apparently a couple of the diff builders in Adelaide who fit them have had the issue and they've had to pull the centre back out to sort it out. I don't know if Eaton's also have the same problem sometimes.

Mine is a genuine Eaton to suit M80.

The gears are a little noisy sometimes but only because I didn't have the right shims to get the pinion depth correct.

I have a Harrop/Eaton unit for another car and it seems "looser" internally than the genuine Eaton unit. All the never Eaton type units have a little pre-load spring in the centre which is supposed to help.

There was another weird noise but I think that might have been caused by a tired CV shaft which I changed out some time during covid.

Pulled the spare out to give it a clean.
It’s decorative only. Checked the date code. March 97 :D
