Hi guys,

I’ve got a rebuilt trimatic stronger clutches etc with a 5k stall and a 3 core trans oil cooler.
I’ve just installed a temp gauge for the trans. I just wanna know what a normal running temp is?? While driving normally it’s sitting at 100c and when I’m sitting at a set of lights or give it a bit it jumps straight to 120c. The temp gauge is in Fahrenheit.
I honestly didn’t think it would be this high with the oil cooler!!
Should I be concerned??
Thanks boys!!

is the temp sender in the sump surrounded by the oil ? or sounds like it may be on an exit flow after the converter as it heats up so quick ?

That is probably a bit higher than ideal.

As above, where is the temp sensor located? Ideally it needs to be in the pan, if it's in the cooler circuit it needs to be after the transmission cooler. The fluid going to the transmission cooler is coming straight from the converter and is the hottest fluid in the transmission.

I’m actually unsure where the sensor is. I didn’t install the cooler. It was done already.
I’ll have to look.

Thanks for the chart! I’ll double check where the sensor is! Thanks boys!

Yeah that looks high but there are different places that will give different readings so check with transmission guy where they want it.

Other things can be done to help like running lines through radiator first then transcooler & also RTS alloy deep pan.

My vh sle had 4.5k stally 4.56 gears with transcooler that should have been bigger...it didn't slip & trans fluid was always nice colour never actually got around to fitting trans temp guage or buying better pan or cooler....

Mmmm so it looks like the temp sender is at the oil cooler…
The trans cooler fan flicks on when my main radiator fans come on.

Is that outlet or inlet line of transmission?

Would be 2 different temperatures like when sender unit is in pan.

I would expect 180-210 on that gauge.
