Yeh Its kinda hard to see cause even new ones can look dirty very quickly.
Best bet is to ask for packaging that the unit comes in, thats prolly all you can do and its most likely too late now anyway.

A secondhand one should be fine anyway, they are usually pretty reliable.

I crawled underneather the car past the fuel tank .
then crawl back out again because I didn't really know what to look for.

there a black box LHS next to the diff . I think there's a fuel filter mounted sideways . A bit of cabling (most of it covered in dirt )
