some great feed back here , exactly what im after. Thanks heaps for all the replies.
crane has a 230 and 234 cam # 888251 .
some one mentioned crane #888261 but has 234 and 238 . probably a bit over the top for cruising?
I'm the only one to quote a grind number so far.
Or from crane:
My pick would be 888231
222/230 .542/.563 lift.
Not sure if 112lsa is too wide though.
But that is smaller than the one you say.

Keep in mind your original goal. Tough mid range with good manners (and not ruining economy too much)
I'm not chasing straight line speed, its mostly a cruiser I want to be able to jump in and start it and drive it , so street manners . But of coarse I want it to be worth while all the effort for stroking, and have the power to drop skids when I ask it too.

My 355 has 'low compression' and a short cam. And it can hate tyres whenever I want. The only downside is it doesn't make power after about 6k.
Which is certainly not an issue given your outline.
Pick a good cam, but don't doubt yourself that it may be 'small'

I don't know the rpm in 5th as it hasn't been run with that gearbox yet.
crane list the 888251 at operating range 3000 - 6500 , then in the small print says to deduct 500 rpm for 350 engines so 2500 . Its right on the border line isn't it.

im still learning all the variables, so much thought lol.
the only people that I have disagreed with atm has been with crane suggestion , when I told them me specs they said to use compucam 2030 # 889711
214 , 214
that seemed to me like a standard cam. and I might be wrong , but not worth the effort or coin.
the help here has been awesome,

The bonus of roller cams is you do not need to change lifters when you change cams. Also no run-in procedure.
That cam is probably ok for your requirements if you had stock compression or a little more. But if you are at 10 or so comp, I would go up one in their range.

im running a 888241 in my VS (VT Roller Block)

its a very similar spec 355 by the sound of it to yours, H beams, Torque power Dual Plane etc but mine is and Auto with a 3000 stall and 3.89 diff gears, it also runs Crane Tie Bar Lifters, instead of the factory spider cradle and YellaTerra Platinum Race Rockers. and a Crane Hi-6

The main thing it was built for was just a cruiser. it seems to pull very quick from 0-6000, but hasnt got much more in it above that. my tuner also said that much above this RPM range the coil wont recharge quick enough to refire.

im quite happy with it, don't think mine would of had any more benefit with a larger cam. Initially the thought had crossed my mind but it would of required a larger stall. If it was a manual i might have.

I originally only wanted a 2500rpm stall, as it was for a street car. The only reason i went with the 3000rpm is it was a 10" one and the place that built the trans said it would rev/stall up quicker being smaller than a 2500rpm stall which would be a larger diameter.
