  • Hi Ray.
    Just wondering if you know......
On the VT, are the only earth points from the battery, to the power steering pump bracket
and at the point on the body under the cruise control/ABS module?

    Thanks,
    Geoff.
No mate, both hands were on the insulation part of the probes when i tested the wire.
Even though there was resistance to ground, I could not get a dead short on that wire between the H/U and the body grommet.
There is definitely something amiss in that couple of feet of wire.

One thing i did forget to do was to re wire the tweeter when I isolated the positive wire from the speaker
    It's done now, just finished.
You know I didn't think of the tweeter.
But anyway....it's all working well now. Everything is crisp and clean.
The only way to solve the problem is to pull the loom apart as I said before.
But as long as it works now, I'm happy.
When I tested that grey wire, it was completely disconnected from the head unit/amp and the speaker.
In other words, I had two bear ends of the wire when i put the meter on it.
I isolated the short to somewhere in the loom under the glove box area.
I wasn't about to pull the dash and loom apart to find the fault in the wire.

I think the resistance was around 8k ohms to earth. So it wasn't much. Just enough to upset that speaker with the amp connected,
but not enough when I just ran the H/U without the amp.

Another thing that happened when it was originally wired up with the amp, was that if the earth was disconnected from the speaker and the positive wire still connected,
the speaker would still work, albeit with the same faults as I mentioned before.
I thought maybe when I ran the speaker wire loom from the amp, I'd some how pinched a wire somewhere.
There was bad continuity of the front left, negative grey wire, between the inside of the body grommet to the door and the head unit.
There was a slight resistance to earth.
This some how affected the other speakers performance.
When it was connected, there was hardly any separation between front and rear but balance was ok.

If the head unit and amp had been off for a while, when switched on, the L/F speaker was extremely muffled.
When turned off, the speaker would gurgle for a couple of seconds
If the system was turned off then on again, all would seem ok, except for the faults I mentioned.

I ran the amp's speaker wires down the left side of the car, so it was just a matter of isolating the factory wire, separating the L/F negative speaker wire from the amp wiring loom
and re routing it through the door to the speaker.
    Tell me something Tas.
The problem i had with the positive wire to the left front speaker, stuffing up that speaker and whole system, when i installed the amp.
Why didn't it do it before the amp was installed?
Ha-ha. I did it for my benefit, not others.
If people want to visit my Profile, they'll have to put up with it lol.
And what makes you think I'm a cranky 'ol bastard?
