    Planning An LS1 Build

Funny you should ask. I decided it’s coming time to be back here to pick things up again. The build had to be delayed due to rotator cuff surgery. However, in the meantime, I picked up an VX (2000) HSV Grange, thanks to a good friend, in exceptional shape. I’ve now the good fortune of having...

Thanks muchly. Will look into now.

    Planning An LS1 Build

It's been a little while... I'm hoping to continue here with a question on brakes. The HSV Grange series 1 came with standard brakes. I've heard upgrading to the HSVs is expensive. Do I have options here with upgrading (as in size & performance), or am I limited to just replacements (disk...

    Yeah, I'm not surprised...

I'll take that advice and add it to my Varex research. Custom! Great

Right. And yes I have heard that about X Force. Hmmm

Love it. The Varex and 4" sizing sounds awesome. Will look into Varex. thanks

    Planning An LS1 Build

Don't go twin 3" unless got decent sized stally & short diff gears or manual. I've had 2 daily driver vy m6 cars....otr/tune/4-1's also tri-y's extractors/100 cell cats with twin 3' x-force....last one got lost it's rego before 3.9's went in. Honestly think they all should be like that as a...

    Planning An LS1 Build

That’s funny. Mind you, I’ve been gradually obtaining parts, some of which are fitted (LS6 manifold; OTR); some not (3”dual exhaust; long extractors; high volume fuel pump; etc.)

    Good to know.

    Planning An LS1 Build

Sounds pretty much the plan so far (ported heads; cam; etc.) And yes, absolutely no rushing in.

    Planning An LS1 Build

Yes, absolutely. This little exercise (in the Forum) is to seek out input from those like you with the experience I don’t yet have, for the purpose of “knowing what path & budget.” I certainly have no intention of throwing dollars at a NA build, only later to find it’s unsuitable (in part or...

    Planning An LS1 Build

“Go to the drags…” That’s a great suggestion. Do you think a decent option might be to do what I’m considering: Build a decent NA (as outlined in my opening Post in this Thread) as a ‘stage one’, with the view of future proofing it (within reason) to accomodate a turbo? I like the idea of...

    Planning An LS1 Build

Yes, I hear you. Absolutely right: Cost of build vs opportunity (off track) to put the investment to use. Otherwise … what’s the point? As I’m very keen for the turbo experience, I’m seeking out the middle ground between building enough to adequately and comfortably support one — and where a...

    Planning An LS1 Build

Yeah that’s excellent food for thought. I’ve started digging into trans options, including TH 400.
  17. E

    Planning An LS1 Build

Right. The more I looked into that centrifugal blower, the less it became as the preferred option. I can see the build outgrowing it, so now looking into adding a turbo. Also, curious to learn what to do transmission-wise. Currently, 4L60E, which I thought would be suitable, with some...

You previously mentioned the potential of “slip“ (as a concern I need to consider). How would a RaceTCS apply in my case?

Cool. I checked out a few vids. Very interesting. Look forward to your update.

Must have missed the notification for your reply. Sorry. Man, really great response. Thanks. This business sounds insane: “He stated that it was a weird sensation in the wet to just mash the pedal with TC set to minimal% slip and the car just accelerating off like a cut snake, or set it to a...

“Fun but mild” . Thanks for the input on the ECU. Good to know I don’t have to look at that for a while.

    Well, isn’t that handy!

Yeah, I hear you: That ECU is a bit hard to ignore.

    Planning An LS1 Build

Thanks for that. I’ll be revisiting turbos now I’m a bit better armed. This “boost by gear/RPM/MPH” control really has my attention. To-date, feedback on the PCM (when asking about upgrading) has been that it’s okay. But I do understand what you’re saying, so yes I have looked at Haltech...

    Planning An LS1 Build

Thanks for that. Yes, initially I thought turbo. Looked into it along with everything else. And here we are. But now … I’m curious again. Sounds like you paid for your Harrop in more ways than one. Shame. Interesting about tuning with a turbo “per gear.” Can’t help but notice your...

Wow! Now that's interesting. I expect to hear back from Tim today. What you've raised, has yet to come up in conversation. But I'll be sure to bring it up now. If you've a moment, care to give me a brief on what you mean and why ("the LS will eat it up..." and "they don't have the velocity for...

    O ok. Thanks for that…

    Planning An LS1 Build

Thanks for the breakdown on the stall. Looks like it’s worth spending the time learning more about E85 cos that’s a helluva difference for a boosted LS. When you’re talking about compression, what are we doing to adjust it/maintain it? I guess I’m asking what considerations factor in to...

    Planning An LS1 Build

“What car?” Just scroll back thru the thread for a summary of the build. “Rear bushes” etc.: Yes, although I didn’t include it here in the summary, the suspension and everything related to bushings and mounts comprise part of the plan. But I haven’t heard of “inserts.” Interesting. As far as...

    Planning An LS1 Build

Yes, I have taken notice of the BTR cams. I hear what you’re saying about traction up top. Interesting what you’re saying about both supercharger types, in regards cam overlap. But on that: in what direction do I head in terms of determining overlap, especially in consideration with the other...
  37. E

    Planning An LS1 Build

Ah, right. I was of the understanding a centrifugal supercharger doesn't add much down low; needs some RPM. That's why I thought that gearing would be fine. But I also thought along those lines with choosing a cam. However, you mentioned I may do better with a cam that has a longer duration...
  38. E

    Planning An LS1 Build

What do you mean “slip?” [diff, stall u should suit to the power ur going to make and style of power, the centri blowers build boost as they increase rpm and too high gearing could make it slip too easy]
  39. E

    Planning An LS1 Build

That’s a lot to take in (rethinking the diff gearing & toque converter). But I’ll chat with a cam place about something more suitable to match the blower. The diff gearing and parts I’ve already bought. But not the torque converter. That’s planned for when the transmission’s refurbished.
