Yeah, your not going to get any advance from the Bosch dizzy as all it is designed to do is send a timing signal to the ecu and distribute the spark.
Your best bet is to probably pick up an MSD dizzy so you can set a proper advance curve. In the mean time I would suggest advancing the dizzy as far as it will go until it pings at low rpm as it should drive better until you can sort it out properly.
396rwhp isn't that bad at all, the 286 isn't exactly a huge cam.
