Yeah, your not going to get any advance from the Bosch dizzy as all it is designed to do is send a timing signal to the ecu and distribute the spark.

Your best bet is to probably pick up an MSD dizzy so you can set a proper advance curve. In the mean time I would suggest advancing the dizzy as far as it will go until it pings at low rpm as it should drive better until you can sort it out properly.

396rwhp isn't that bad at all, the 286 isn't exactly a huge cam.

idle/free reving having no real load needs the potential of lots of timing, idle might be 13 then give it a rev might need up to 40 deg

396 would be great, but its only 369 and falls over hard .

With a proper timing curve it should wake up nicely.

forget the Vac advance, go the mechanical....as u did.

When You get it:
Use the black advance stop bush.
Use 1x Heavy silver spring and 1x light silver spring.

Set your total timing advance for eg 28-30 degrees or what ever she likes as long as it doesn't ping. your initial timing (idle) will be the sum of your total minus your advance.
Or some just lock it out....but most tuners advise on having a curve for a streeter
