Hey guys what’s everyone’s thoughts on those ac recharge cans that you can get at the likes of super cheap auto etc? Or am I better to take it to an aircon place and get it done there? Car is an 07 VE SS

Just get it done PROPERLY at you local air con place that will check it before gassing it up.
Why would you even consider wasting your money on anything else?

I think the only place who do the cans are Bursons they have the hychill minus 30, 134a is a licence refrigerant as its toxic, yes you can buy them on ebay but hardly worth it as you will need 2 cans. I would pay the extra and have it done right wrong pressures will only cost you more in the long run, besides your better off having it vacuumed and tested for leaks no use putting a 60 dollar can in it to see it just leak out..

I had a recent issue with my Air Con, as it wasn't very cold [pushing out 14deg min],
and was aware it was leaking, as I noticed it when I serviced my car last time, but procrastinated to fix it, because it wasn't that hot.
I had seen the fluorescent oil on the underside of the high pressure rubber pipe and fittings, so for a quick fix, as I drive every day,
I purchase one of those kits [R134a gas canisters and filler pipe and gauge from eBay] and topped it up,
So it has fixed it at the moment, and is nice and cold again,
and the output temp of the dash vents is back to 4deg as per attachment.
It was working hard to drag it down from 44deg to 4deg, keeping in mind, that's while the car was moving, so there was enough air flowing through the condenser.
However I do have the replacement Pipe and Manifold to install shortly.
The common place they leak is indicated by the red circles at the fittings, there is another thread I have replied to that another member had a similar problem.

In a nut shell, if you know what to do, and/or you can follow instructions,
It very easy, but I have had a bit of experience with Air Cons over the years on ducted systems and mainly on Cars.

Compressor pump seal are the most common fault, Also the TX valve are known to leak, Evap can leak too, you can buy the stop leak crap to put in but its only a band-aid fix, If the system is empty then I would put hychill as you can get away with one can as most commodores will only require 300g not like the 134a which needs around 700g to fill. We are so ripped off here on prices those do it yourself kits are under 30 in America here they are between 60-120, if you go on marketplace on Facebook their always someone doing them for about 80-100.
Also there a site on google that have hychill for 35 a can, you can screw on nothing else needed, just type your car in on the hychill and it will tell you how much to put in then just weigh the can until you reach the recommendation .

The best test tool is a UV Torch, and gauges
I purchased both of these, and used the UV torch at 10pm and found where I suspected it was leaking, and it was correct, [Visible fluorescent refrigerant Oil]
I checked around the compressor and other fittings, all correct.
I also checked the pressures and they were running perfectly after the top up,
Approx. 165psi on the high side, and 32psi on the low side, within GM Specs.

Make sure your sitting down when they tell you how much it will be to repair,
Because you will get a shock when they say they will need to replace this and that, and re-gas it.
And the OEM parts are not cheap.

HSV VT GTS
I'm taking my VT GTS in for a new compressor tomorrow. Yes, I know it isnt cheap but you got to have aircon working in these temps and I'm told that the system needs to be flushed and cleaned to make sure that there are no contaminants or other bits of crap left in the system to stuff the new compressor.
By the way I did see some of those refrigerant refill cans at Repco the other day. I didn't check the price but was interested to see that they were available.
