Did I mention I have NFI with electronics! Would greatly appreciate some help. Am seriously considering violence against the multimeter right now.

If you have voltage on the earth wire it means you have voltage drop, ie. a bad connection.

what actually stops working? Just completely dead, or just certain functions stop?

Thanks for replying. The BCM dies totally. Have cleaned all earth wires and now getting zero readings. Had two earths with damaged wires and have fixed. Am hesitant to take it for a good run. Anything else I should check first??

No guarantee of course, but I would say that was your problem. Bad grounds kill electronics.
