Hey everyone!

I've got a few things happening under the bonnet – wonder if they are related?

Recently I started hearing a high pitched whine. One of the mechanics at the local shop took a really quick look (while they were doing other cooling system stuff) and reckoned it was a vacuum leak – from under the cover and to the rear of the engine. Said it wouldn't kill me!

And the next day I started smelling fuel. There's no visible signs ... wondering if it is the fuel pressure regulator (according to search/read)? Or can a bad injector give off fuel smell?

Does this sort of thing show up in scan codes?

Thoughts?

It’s possible. Two simple tests would confirm the fault.
1. A fuel pressure test.
2. Vacuum leak positively located with smoke test.

Check the engine oil for fuel smell. Open up the oil filler, have a smell. Smell the dip stick for fuel.
If the high pressure pump is leaking, pressure won’t be great at times and leak fuel into the engine oil.

At the time I was thinking if you were close to my location,
I could smoke test it for you, as that would eliminate that side of any vac leak you may have causing the issue/fault.

Maybe another user in your area maybe able to assist.

The other thing I was thinking,
is the PCV plumbing,
if that had come apart, or broken, that could give you a fuel/oily smell.

When there is a fuel leak, pity you cannot put a Die in the fuel tank and will show up where its leaking from.
