- '81 Diesel Hilux / '75 Landrover series 3
I wasnt going to post a thread of it but, its a keeper and the first decent car i have bought so i thought i might as well, also i want to use this thread to document the thing i done to it.
im basically trying to keep it clean and original ( mostly original)
Make: Toyota
Model: Hilux LN40 2wd
Year: 1981
Paint: original Yellow
Engine: 1L 2.2 ltr Diesel
Gearbox: W50 5 speed
Wheels: Standard steel 14" with chrome caps
Sound: Original AM radio with a single dash speaker
256,000km
3rd owner
been local most its life
600k's out of a 51ltr tank, not bad for the age
As a birthday present for myself and seeing that i was taking the landy off the road for rebuild i thought i would buy a good reliable ute as a daily runabout while i build the landy.
after weeks searching for the right car and 4 days after my 18th i came across a nice yellow hilux ute that looked to be very well looked after, it was in mossman about 70 km away so i dove up there to inspect it, and i fell in love with it, it has almost no rust, its mostly original, original paint, and very good interior, HUGE rear tub with canopy and has owners manuals service history and receipts, i gave him the money and drove it back home.
I knew there was a couple problem with it but what 30 year old car doesn't. the clutch felt like crap so i assumed it was the slave cylinder which i was correct, 15klm from home and the slave cylinder go's so i had to rev match it the rest of the way home, fitted new slave the next day.
The front r/h wheel cylinder was sticking and causing the wheel to lock up when cold, but instead of replacing the cylinder, i just converted them to front disc brakes with brand new rotors and pads, i got the stub axles with calipers off a mate for $100
She's VERY slow, it did 90 max with the old 4 speed , i replaced the 4 with a celica 5 speed from a same model hilux and a newish clutch/pressure plate, just swap bellhousing and mount and then a straight swap and did the rear main while i was at it, i can cruise at 100 now easy
Gave it a good cut and polish and claybar and a good cleaning.
ive owned it for 4 months and obsessed with it, its my pride and joy. don't see many of these old girls on the road
Found a sunvisor at the local dump, $4 later came out with with me new visor
Plans are to tidy it up a bit more and recover the seats, and because i had to cut a new hold in the floor for the new gearbox shifter location ive got to weld up the hole, and to fix the hole in the vinyl i have a centre console for a bucket seat hilux and was gonna cut the middle section and make it shorter to fit in front of the seat and cover the hole
