Engine cover, aka: turtle shell

I second that, it’s the crush spacer for the rubber bushes for the turtle shell.

1. Is it common for these to corrode, ultimately requiring a replacement or weld repair?
I'd like a second opinion before accepting the word of my mechanic. Surely rust would stain the coolant, which looks pretty good.
Won't know til it comes off. Hopefully it's just the gasket.

2. Is the inlet manifold from a VT compatible with a VS block?
Edit: looks like there's an EGR valve on the VT & and an extra temp sensor on the VS. bugger. Finding a second hand VS inlet manifold will be a pain.

Unlikely to have corroded.

How does he know its corroded? (wont be rust. Alloy doesn't rust, it corrodes.)

My guess is, its the valley (also known as the LIM gasket set) gasket?

Your mechanic doesn't seem to know commodores?

I'd take it to somebody that does.

Or do it yourself. If you choose to dyi, use the blue coloured seals for the valley gaskets end seals. Thats the seals for vs - vts1.
The ones with the orange seals are the wrong ones for your motor.
Heres a link on "how to change a v6 vs - vy inletmanifold gasket".

See what happens. He's looked after me in the past, but you can't trust anyone nowadays. If he rips me off it'll be the last time I use him. Might see if someone on autoguru is interested. unlikely though

Its not the easiest thing to do for a beginner and a few lil things to change/check along the way. But that guide linked is very good to follow. Otherwise if you have the money, get someone to do it for you.
