You've just made me realise I've been subconsciously thinking like this all along without knowing why! Thanks for that doc. It obviously doesn't always pay to think (or not think) like that, but your right, there is something about an overly detailed second hander that can sometimes reek more than the over used air freshener itself.
So I guess you wouldn't by my wifes 2012 Hyundai i20 which is spotless (she is a clean freak) and has only 28650 kays :D

I think the 100k thing also relates to timing belt replacement time, which can cost around $1000 or more depending on make and who does the job.

I think you will also find that most cars that have 100k on the clock are also out of stat warranty. A car still under warranty holds some extra value. My old HX had well over 300k on the original 202 and it was still driving and wasn't burning oil. I'd say compression would have been low but it still drove ok. My brothers old XC did 500k on the original engine and he was not one to spend money on cars. Even the diff had no whine and he never changed the diff oil.

If it was me I wouldn’t touch it. Not because it clean but because it’s only done about 3000kms per year. Higher chance of sludge buildup and various parts popping off once they are actually asked to do real work.

Yes. That’s always one to look out for. The classic dump and run at 99,999kms because the timing belt replacement is due!

Got a 1976 model hemi that's done over 400,000 and still going strong....

The auto has been replaced, as they aren't the best...(BW35)....Diff, still the original one, with a disc brake conversion....

I know the full history of the car...I'm owner number 3...Owner no 1 I didn't know, but owner number 2 was the wifes aunty, who told me all the history...Win win for me...

Does it burn oil though?
My missus had a 2001 Hyundai Excel from new, after about six or so years I was putting more oil in it than she was petrol. That car eventually went to my youngest daughter around 2010. She drove it for a couple of years and then one day she’d just got out of the car with her baby, and as she got through the front door of her house she heard an almighty bang and looked back to see her car gone! An old guy up the road had a heart attack and blacked out whilst coming down the road in his car. I guess you know the ending, no more car and sadly no more old guy:( But hey, my daughter and her baby were very lucky!

Amazes me why punters get all bent out of shape buying a car with 100 + k on it. As long as the log book is solid then 100000 K is nothing.
Bought mine with 170 k on the clock and now 220 K. It aint missed a beat.

Noooo don’t. There’s always a reason someone gets rid of a car, so it becomes someone else’s problem
