Yes Holden had an ECU update that relaxed the limits before a DTC was raised but that was just a Band-Aid that didn’t really resolve the underlying issue which was poor quality chains that stretched. That software update to fix a hardware defect smelt like a “push the problem outside warranty” type fix.

Just can’t remember whether the update was for early or late VE’s and/or whether it was rolled out to all V6’s regardless :oops:
Pretty sure it was for vehicles prior to MY9.5.

A workmate has had P0018 for the last 12 months on his VE series 2 Omega LFW over 250,000kms, had no chain work done for the last 10 years since he has owned it. Start the car and clear codes, can drive for hours until stopping engine, next start it shows P0018 again. No noises.
Last year I did look at the sensors and swapped between intake / exhaust on the drivers side, no change.
Have also removed and checked VVT solenoids. Applied some volts and cleaned with brake cleaner, no change.

He was going to take it to an auto electrician late last year, but is not too worried about it.

How did you go with chain replacements ?

Workmate has asked me again today if I am keen to tackle his chain replacements. Never done it before.:rolleyes:
I have said he will need to leave me his car for a few weeks so I can work on it in my spare time, he said OK :(

Tell him 2 -6 months, in case of unforseen problems. Longer it takes, the more l'm going to charge you. So, it could end up costing $10 k - 20 k.
That might slow him down? ;) :D

@woteva

Its not too hard,
The hardest part was getting the Harmonic Balancer off.

I have done it twice, because the first chain kit was a piece of Cheap Chinese shyt,
The magic tools to get it right, are the Cam Lock Tools, best investment I did, especially learning about Alloytecs,
Before I bought my Adventra, I didn't know anything about the Alloytec's,

The Cam lock tools saves piss farting around with Stage 1 and Stage 2 Timing
I used Stage 2 Timing [personal choice], I marked the new Chain links with fluorescent Chalk markers
as its easier to see the markings through the sprocket holes.

@woteva

I forgot to mention,
While you have it pulled down,
Replace the Oil Pump.

I havnt checked out the Repco offering and was looking at the kit from Mace
And cam tools

I do want him to get an auto sparky to check first it is not a sensor problem as there is only a P0018 code on every start up.

Have also read the problem could be cam phasers or sensor gear has moved ?
