G'day,
Just wondering how hard is it to replace the valve springs in a 3800 buick?

I have the opportunity to purchase some crow cam performance valve springs.

I am at a later date going to install yt roller rockers and possibly a cam.

Will having performance springs in for the time being, whilst saving for cam and roller rockers do any damage, maybe give more responsiveness?

Any advice/criticism would be appreciated.

i wouldnt put them on untill you need them man. in a general term, a performance valve spring is usually two things - better quality construction/materials and rated to a higher seat pressure.
so putting them on a stock engine you'll probably find the engine has a unwanted resistance against it from the stiffer valve springs and it would probably be detrimental to making power.
having said that as well, you need to get the right springs and retainers for your application - its not a case of simply getting something that will fit. the numbers need to be crunched to work out the needed valve spring so there wont be any valve bounce or coil bind, etc. happening with the total valve lift achieved from the cam and rockers.

To change valve springs, specialist tools are needed.
I have seen it done without taking the heads off where compressed air is put in the cylinder through the spark plug hole. A special tool is then used to compress the spring to allow the collets/retainer to be removed.
The other way is to take the heads off and use a spring compression tool or have also seen it done in a press.

have read about guys in the states using heavier springs, and it wears the seats (from memory) and after prolonged use, its disastrous! as sircruise said, because of the extra load
