We have currently lost all land based internet down. No EFTPOS anywhere, mob net only and extremely slow, like 1/2 a bar speed. No TV, nothing. Could be out for days reports suggest, or could be out for well over a week. No access to databases for us at work, few business phones statewide as most now run through the internet.

Can Musk help with his starlink or is he too busy solving Ukraine's issues or trying to get to Mars?

PS: So much for the redundancy suposedly built into arpnet/internet. Guess justifying the costs for two disparate routes to the mainland would't fly so they put the two cables in the same trench (which is easier for the bean counters to comprehend). Bean counters can often be dumb fcuks really

Also highlights why cash is king... but all governments want their peoples by the balls

It's ridiculous. The state would be losing millions. Not sure if people can go to Coles without cash or buy petrol?

What's ridiculous is that people figuratively drop their pants and place their balls in the hairy hand of government and/or banks because of convenience or because they want things now...

As a society, we all get what we reap o_O

… or saving money? It’ll certainly be cramping the style for online expenditure! A penny not spent is a penny saved. :)

They dont build redundancy into the system. If redundancy happens to occur because of other economic incentives then that’s the best you’ll get.

Just have a look at Tonga who only just got their internet back after a month. No money in making redundancy so it doesn’t happen unless there’s another economic incentive.

Amazing to think the internet is run through a cable draped on the sea bed floor.

Turns out it wasn't the Bass Link. It was both the other two cables owned by Telstra. One was dug up in Melbourne by civil contractors. The other one was damaged on the west coast but no info on what happened there.

How do you propose they do it otherwise? 300km is too far for overhead cables over a sea crossing and mob towers can't send the signal that far.
