V8 Auto issues?

Hi,

I'm having issues in my 08 VE SS with the auto trans. After coming to a stop the check engine light would come on and the trans selector on the dash would read P even though the trans is in drive and won't shift out of gear even on auto select. After turning the car off for a few minutes it worked fine (engine light still on) but about 15 minutes later it did the same thing, turn off turn on and the car would work again. I would run a diagnostic but I have no idea on how to do that with this car.

I tried looking for some threads about this issue but I couldn't find any and any help would be much appreciated.

Does the car stay in drive or drop out if drive when the check engine light comes on?

It stays in drive, doesn't shift though.

EDIT: I should say the car stays in drive while I believe it thinks it is in park.

Perhaps it might be time for a visit to an Automatic Transmission Specialist for a service and diagnostics. Sooner the better before you get stranded on the side of the road.
