Not uncommon unfortunately and has been known to occur on vehicles that were serviced as per the manufacturers recommendations.

id say it would be a good idea to run some sludge remover every second or third service

OR better info for the owner...

Standard service interval is probably fine for a car that is driven constantly and everything is heated through thoroughly but mummies car that does short trips to the shops once or twice a week and the daily school run and never gets up to full temp (engine coolant temp is different to oil operating temp) will sludge up much quicker.
