Just looked at Stuff.co.nz
I don't like saying this is unprecedented, but I have never seen this before in my life!
Hope you and yours, and all NZ members are OK.

Yeah, we are all OK, thanks :) Mr 23 has reported the water level is receding. The rain has slowed down for now and looking at the rain radar we might cop a bit more from the edge of the storm in the next couple of hours.

Yes, this is the worst I've seen. Pictures from the CBD and New Market has surface flooding and the storm water is actually coming out of the man hole covers. I think we've had about 150mm of rain in the last 3 hours, there is surface flooding at Auckland airport and a plane struck some landing lights earlier and has put part of the runway out of commission, international flights are been diverted.

There is plenty of damage though around the city, the mop up job is going to be costly.

It's a "normal year" at the moment. La Nina is marked by stinking hot-dry weather on the west coast & wet conditions East. This year has been very mild in Perth.
Like WA, NZ was hit by a freak storm

For example my ideal retirement place would be Broken Hill or the Pilbara etc.

Wet season Pilbara aint exactly fun.
Although depends how far inland you go double digit humidity ment it would rain when I was up there. Super hot and dry, then massive rain.
Dry season was just cold in the mornings being so far in too.

Sounds like it won't be fun for anyone trying to get back from NZ for the start of the school year here in Aus.

We decided to head home early, coming up out of Rotorua visibility was bad the wipers couldn't keep up and we were down to about 60km/h but on the other side of the ranges the weather is clearing. Mr 23 said the sun is out at home.
