IMO use the thinnest oil u can that keeps the pressure safe for what the engine is doing, my thought on ''thin'' is a 5-30 or 10-40 should be fine for most LS, OR just give the engine what it likes, if say u have a nice quiet engine then it starts to tick and u think its getting older then use a thicker oil and the ticking stops u also have to think why was it ticking and it prob has the same issue still but its just masked now with thicker oil, as mentioned more pressure is less flow if the same pump is used

watched a video this morning where the guy had his oil tested after different interval changes - 5000, 7500 & 10000 (miles). Interestingly, the 7500 miles came out best. not sure i'd go 12,000 km between oil changes, though

You're over-thinking it Losh, stick to what you run and it will be fine and even a slightly thicker oil won't hurt just don't go putting in a 60 or 70 weight oil.

The other big thing to take away here is don't rev a cold motor. My old V6 would idle at about 40psi hot, cold idle was 80psi + which clearly shows cold oil does not flow as well.

I'll stick with the 10w 40. I do get a tick for the first 5 or so seconds, which I put down to the 10 weight. I switched from 5w to 10w because it was using about a litre between oil changes (10k) and needing a top up. Switching to 10w I use 400-500mls every 10k and virtually nothing until about 7k and I don't need to top it up.

I do have LS7 lifters but everything else bar the Crow cam is an unknown.

There is this fix for minor oil consumption on LS engines.

Then you can go back to running the 5W

Only annoying thing about 10w oil it's basically twice the price of 5w.
