A bit more info :)

So basically, some extra air for peak power when open, but closed position was really about the noise...
HSV market the bimodal intake as if it's a performance innovation when in fact, it's a device to pass ADR noise compliance with a better flowing airbox.

My 340 airbox is a Series 1 and I took the plenum tube off that sends induction noise into the cabin. It's a bit hard to tell driving the car, if the 340 setup has more induction noise than the stock air box and plenum tube.

On the E3, the EDI program for the bimodals was to make sure the valves were shut when complying with a drive by noise test conditions.

Really...??

do they do a drive by noise test ... engine at idle or in coast mode?

if they do it with WOT... there is NO WAY an E3 would pass any drive by noise test
mine at WOT.. any revs, could be 1000 or 6000 was as noisy as hell! my missus used to comment on this!

the GENF is the same... WOT at1000rpm in 2nd or 3rd gear, you sound like you disturbed a bloody jumbo jet
the intake noise is off the planet!

Google the conditions required when complying with a roadside/drive by noise test. (when the E series were current models).

Andrew Purcell could explain it to you.
