They just called back and said it had [actually only] taken 5 hours: 2 hours per front mount and another for the trans mount. At least their hourly rate is not too bad – $95 p/h plus GST. Still reckon I am getting stiffed on the time. Anyway, thanks for the tips – better to be in the know!

That's what I thought. The shop that has it is saying 6 hours. (And my regular mechanic estimates 3-4 hours.) I'll give hm a call.

Ja, that's what I am coming to realise. Ordered the part just before. I was mostly only hesitating in case there were other tuning/running issues at the same time. But doesn't hurt changing the part – I know it has been ticking (more than it should) for a few months now. Thanks.

THIS ˆˆˆ is exactly what I am experiencing with my VE Commodore. Anyone know of a mechanic in Brunswick that can sort it?

My mechanic took a look at it and agreed it was not right – more than just incorrect idle. Suspected engine mounts and tested – load at standstill made the engine rise up visibly ... both in D and R. Swapping out for new next week.

Just did a freeway drive and can report: The rumble is somewhat present in top gear with just a little throttle – that's about 1100rpm. And when I select reverse the rumble is even more noticeable – giving the car quite a shake. Engine mounts maybe?

It's fixed. All done. Finally! Got a referral to AGM in West Heidelberg and they sounded on the ball – and they do drag racing stuff as well as classics (my thing). They were inclined to fix rather than fully re-build ... also said it was unlikely to be a clutch pack after just 150K kms. But...

Did a road test on the freeway. Shift through 'S' setting was smooth. Manual shift from 1>6 with changes at 2000rpm was smooth. Manual shift from 1>6 at WOT with changes at 4000rpm was smooth. Hmmm. Have asked my auto elec if he can check battery and connections as recommended.

So ... if a single solenoid had been replaced, it would have been on this plate? And all this can be accessed/serviced/replaced without removal of the trans?

Apparently when the ATF is changed a good deal of it remains in the unit ... so it ends up looking dirty again shortly after change even though 80% of it is new. Of course, it's hard to check on the road given this is a sealed unit – no dip stick.

I never use the manual shift, so it was quite lucky that I thought to test it. Yes, I'll try the manual shift for a week and see what happens.

Good question. I tested this yesterday. It shifted manually with no problem.

A second trans shop just looked at the car. It is consistently slipping from 3 > 4. They said remove and reco – $2400 if I am lucky, and $2750 for standard reco. More if it needs a radiator – which is uncommon. Interestingly, they reckoned it is not possible to just be changing one solenoid as...

Thanks for chiming in ... that's pretty interesting. As far as I know the battery is good. It ran flat a few months back (light left on) but my auto elec gave it a re-charge and gave it the all clear. Also, I do hear a bit of a 'tick/click' sound from below with some gear changes.

In order of events: 1. Engine warning light was coming on – codes said cam sensor. 2. Was due for a trans service so had that done ... and a solenoid was replaced. 3. As soon as it came back the trans shift was not smooth so had it checked (different scanner) – codes again said cam sensor and...

A couple of weeks in ... Timing chain is all good – no engine lights coming on. BUT the trans is still slipping ... between 3 and 4. On change it feels unengaged, revision a bit (feels like slipping) and then clunks into gear. This is intermittent ... and nothing in particular prompts it –...

Ok ... it's back from the shop and feels different. Way less slipping, but still not 100% smooth trans shifts ... but that's maybe just the way a 150K unit will be. Scan codes were: P0017, P0172, P0175.

Ja, he did scan and there was nothing re the transmission coming up. That's why I am a bit worried. With all that sophistication I just don't get how some of these mechanics have said that the timing chain issue can cause poor shift with the transmission and throw it (sometimes) into limp mode...

Crunch day today – 6 months later! The car is with a local mechanic to have the timing chain swapped out – has done plenty of these and is using original GM kit. Ralph d'Silva did a reading and confirmed the timing chain needed replacing – and the car previously had the change in settings to...

Good to know (1) re being unrelated issues – I could not figure any connection. And (2) yes, I figured it would hit limp mode of it sensed something like a back timing chain. So far, it has only done it a couple of times (over several months) and only then for a very short time. Just...

Thanks. Trans was serviced a month back, including replace faulty solenoid. I think I will take it to Rd'S and get them to diagnose with proper scan tool ... and if they pick up a trans error at the same time I will go back and have that sorted separately.
