Thanks - I bought myself a pair of 160mm long nose locking pliers and finally got it out.

After 250k of this never being done, here's the result:

Even with the rag over the top I've damaged this one, so I've ordered a new one from Amazon. I'll clean this one for now, and drill the Amazon one out instead whenever it gets here.

If there is little grooves in the valve from the vise grips, just file them smooth as best you can. It will work fine.

If the PCV valve looks like that, what will it look like under the valve covers?

Also check the PCV plumbing,
BUT, be careful, as the PVC pipe may be brittle !
Check to see if its not blocked using compressed air, be careful it doesn't blow PCV sludge everywhere,
or
use whipper Snipper nylon to loosen any sludge on the pipe.

I'll do this later today with a rag on each end - there was a pool of oil in my intake so I imagine these are pretty clogged up. The plumbing was replaced a couple years ago as it had cracked, so it hopefully shouldn't be brittle yet.

This is what I'm worried about. If I was more mechanically inclined, I'd love to take these apart and clean it, but that's definitely beyond my abilities.

Do frequent oil changes 5000-7500 and use diesel oil 5W-30 or 40. Change filter every 2500. Get them in a bulk pack on eBay or similar.

The detergents in the diesel oil will help slowly break down the grot in there. Slowly.

I’d suggest getting the intake plenum off and cleaning it. Stuff paper towel in the exposed runners or some tape across them. Clean the throttle body with throttle body cleaner. (Unplug it first) Intake pipe. Clean the MAF sensor with MAF sensor cleaner. New metal intake plenum gaskets.

PCV (mod) and VALVE EVAP. Fitted.
I asked for the 2 used parts back.
Got VALVE EVAP no PCV. I would of licked seeing how clean it was and gave the old PCV a screw.
Everthing seams OK.
Drive out on Dealership car was warm so gave it abit felt PCV very clean.

( fit parts supplied refer Daryl
replaced purge valve and vaccum hose fitting as requested by customer )

$90

As the weather's getting warmer, I've been driving with the windows down more often, and I'm getting a really bad smell into the cabin. I've noticed this before (mechanic said he couldn't find anything), but after doing this PCV mod its much, much worse.

Would I be right to assume that either the PCV piping has cracked and needs replacing, or else I need to locktite the PCV valve itself in place? Or something else completely unrelated?

So far I have done:
- PCV mod
- new sparks
- new coils
- manifold insulator gasket from MACE
- clean throttle body
- clean MAF
- clean plenum
- Clean oil out of air intake tubing

Could be oil leaking onto hot surfaces.
The only place that air comes from the engine bay is from the cabin intake.
Try using a pollen filter in there.

When doing this mod, as previously mentioned, you should clean out all the hoses attached to the PCV and clean the throttle body. (Go back to see a tip)
The hoses can also be gunked up. Blow them out with compressed air. Or do your best another way and leave in the sun to get hot and dry out.
If they are hard and brittle, replace them.
